Martin has been involved with the bonsai club for 35 years and he is our club’s “sensei”. Martin can be found from mid-March to late October tending to his over 200 trees. Many of the trees have started their bonsai journey from nursery stock but many have also been created from yamadori collecting.
Martin is not afraid to tackle difficult tree material to create a bonsai.
Every Sunday through our growing season, Martin opens up his backyard to bonsai enthusiasts to what he calls Bonsai Sunday. This is our club’s training day where we have members and first-time artists get hands on training in bonsai. They can bring new material or a work in process project and spend a few hours discussing, repotting, pruning and wiring. Martin is there to provide his opinions but the
attendees have to put in the work which boosts their understanding and confidence.
Aside from Bonsai Sunday, Martin also does many other workshops and demonstrations with the local garden clubs and at a number of local nurseries. Martin is very keen on introducing bonsai to younger people. He has worked with the Girl Guides and worked closely with youths between the ages of 6 and 16.
